More Planning… but Students Don’t Necessarily Count for Planning Purposes

Cambridge University is looking to build 3,000 homes and accommodation for some 2,000 post-graduate students in the North West of the City. The area is between the Huntingdon Road, Madingley Road (A1303) and the M11.

There will be public exhibitions at Fitzwilliam College on Wednesday at 9am-5pm and in the Central Library’s conference room on Saturday, from 10am-6pm.

One of the disadvantages of building special accommodation for students, and not having them rent normal homes – or build normal homes with proviso that they be let as student accommodation, is that the extra housing does not necessarily count towards the governments targets.

So it does not matter that the extra population will use extra services, as far as Whitehall is concerned they simply don’t count.
