Friendly Fire: County Lib Dems Hit City Lib Dems with Big Whine.

Today’s press release by the Lib Dems on the County Council is a classic.

The County Lib Dems' whining has hit an extra target in the Guildhall.

The City Council’s Lib Dems would never dream of having a system whereby the ruling party and oppositions are briefed together or try to run the council through ‘spokes’ [sic].

Whatever its faults, you are clear that the City Council is run by the Lib Dems.

  1. John Downing from the Cambridge News covers this story: 'Cllr Tuck said the joint briefings have been withdrawn following "frequent abuse" by Lib Dems culminating in "inaccurate and irresponsible information" being issued.'

Good decision Jill, one your two predecessors should have taken.

  2. A very decent attempt was made to include the Lib Dems and to listen to and value their input, despite their being 'opposition'. It was an example of fair-minded politics in action.

Most of the Lib Dems had the manners and dignity to respond in kind and it could have worked well. But a small minority seemed to continually abuse the privelige in order to attempt to score some political points with the media. They didn't even do that particularly honestly, in my opinion. We aren't talking "whistle-blowers", more like "personal trumpet blowers."

Worse, the silly arguments put by the Lib Dems over PDGs (Policy Development Groups) has led to their withdrawing from participating in them at all. So the people who voted Lib Dems into their divisions have no representation on Policy Development at all! If I were a voter with a Lib Dem councillor I'd be bloody furious with them!

It's a really silly situation and the Liberal Democrats have brought the current circumstances on themselves. I have no sympathy for them at all.
