Councils Control Just £1 in £20 of their Budgets

The Conservative campaign to put more of the ‘local’ into local government is reinforced by the latest news from The Municipal Journal.

It reports, “New figures analysed from the 13 Total Place pilots show just 5% of local public spending is controlled by elected members, it emerged this week… out of £7,000 per head spent on local public services, only £350 comes under democratic control.”

Furthermore, one council reported having 49 different ‘funding streams’ from central government, each with its own restrictions and reporting mechanisms. The average cost of compliance – reporting back to Big Brother in Whitehall - is £1.5 million per council.

Councils of every political stripe must campaign to reverse this situation.
